Optical Dispenser / Optician
Dispensary positions within an optometry office, often referred to as Optical Dispensers, Opticians, or Eyewear Consultants, focus on helping patients select, fit, and order eyeglasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions from the optometrist.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Eyewear Selection: Guiding patients in choosing frames and lens options (coatings, materials) that suit their prescription, facial features, and lifestyle.
- Measurements & Fitting: Taking precise measurements (pupillary distance, segment height) for lens fitting and adjusting frames for comfort.
- Order Processing: Using specialized software to order lenses and contacts from labs.
- Inventory & Maintenance: Maintaining an organized, clean, and attractive frame display.
- Customer Service: Addressing patient questions regarding warranties, repairs, and product care.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A high school diploma is generally required, with some roles preferring candidates with formal optical training or certification.
- Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a customer-oriented mindset are essential.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to work with prescription processing software and point-of-sale systems.
